Busy, busy, busy time.

My youngest child graduated from elementary school, my oldest from high school and my middle child finish her first year of high school.  I am feeling old and overwhelmed by all the changes.

I am buried under a mosaic mural 8 feet tall by 28 feet long, roughly 1000 pounds of tiles good thing I am not literally buried. Parts of it were created by community members. 6 x 6 quilt blocks.
These quilt blocks will frame the mosaic and the windows of the building.

It is probably the most intense projects I have ever done.

This mural will go outside of the safe and sound shelter for girls.

I hope they will feel loved and protected.

kids and community

I had the pleasure of spending most of this perfect day outdoors installing a mosaic at Maxfield Elementary school. It was sponsored by my new friend Nettie and her non profit Nettie and Friends. It was designed by children and created by everyone we had kids from 5 - 65 work on this project and it is very special! I am so happy to have been invited to be a part of it. Here are some photos after installation but before grouting.
Tomorrow is grouting day I would love help! ;)

bird in hand

its been crazy busy....
I have been waiting for photos to arrive to post. After long last we installed the mosaic at children's hospital but the pictures are not here yet. We had a fabulous albeit snowy opening of the goddess show but the pictures have not arrived yet so...
I will post some photos of stuff  I am playing around with...

a 9 inch glass on glass medallion with fused center, its not grouted yet...

I went to my massage therapist a few weeks ago and had a very nice vision of a bird in my hand, I was trying to figure out how to make that in mosaic I don't have that part figured out yet but here are other examples.. one is cut ceramic, the black is wood and the lower ceramic and glass mosaic.
I hope to post professional photos very soon!

cutouts

I have always loved cutouts starting with paper dolls when I was a kid. Right before I went to graduate school I did a series of 20 paintings on paper that I then cut out into life figures dancing. I realized
that the little milagros I was making maybe should be something more...

First inspiration. Elsa Mora

Mine are ceramic plates and tiles

Here's the first few

They still have a long ways to go, to be as powerful as my inspiration, but they were just plates a few hours ago...
